1/4 cup vegetable oil
4 (4 ounce) cube steaks
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
or cut into strips
1 medium onion, chopped or cut into chunks
1 stalk celery, diced or chopped
1 can mushroom stems and pieces undrained
1 envelope dry onion soup mix
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1 1/2 cups tomato juice OR 1 can tomato sauce
1 cup ketchup
(Everything in this recipe can be modified to taste)
Dredge cube steaks in flour and brown in heated oil in a large skillet.
Add green pepper, onion, celery, mushrooms, oregano, and onion soup mix. Stir together tomato juice (or tomato sauce) and ketchup. Pour over everything and stir.
Cover pan. Cook on stovetop for at least an hour. More time is even better.
Serve over noodles or rice.
This could also be made in a crockpot. It's probably better to brown the meat before putting it in the crockpot.
