Recipe for Mom's Bread and Butter Pickles

Type:   Side
Ingredients:   1 gal. medium cucumbers ( I use real small ones but you can use larger ones, maybe cut in half)
1 green pepper
8 small onions (or some vidalias or sweet onions cut into quarters and separated into slices)
1 sweet red pepper
1/2 c. coarse to medium salt non-iodized
cracked ice
5 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp turmeric
1/2 tsp ground cloves
2 tbl mustard seed
2 tsp celery seed
5 c white vinegar

Other recipes use all spice but it gives a different flavor and I like mom's!
Procedure:   Thin slice cukes. Add sliced onion and peppers cut in narrow strips. Add salt, cover with ice, mix thoroughly. Let stand 3 hours and drain. Combine other ingredients and pour over cuke mixture. Boil. Seal in jars.
Makes 8 pts.
Yields:   8 pints
